During a distinguished career in small animal medicine, he served as President of the Slovenian Small Animal Veterinary Association for six years and has been Regional Director of FECAVA for Slovenia for more than 20 years.

He lectures veterinary students and post-graduates on a range of topics in small animal medicine; has authored numerous papers and is active in research.  His current interest is the use of stem cells in the treatment of dogs with chronic arthritis.

Commenting on the Award to Professor Zorko, WSAVA President Dr Walt Ingwersen, said: “Professor Zorko has made an outstanding contribution to the development of veterinary medicine in Slovenia through his long service to voluntary veterinary organizations and his commitment to teaching and his research.

His dedication to life-long learning has been matched by his willingness to support the next generation of veterinarians in his country and to raise standards of veterinary education, both in Slovenia and elsewhere in Eastern Europe.  He is a worthy winner of this year’s WSAVA Award for Meritorious Service.”

Professor Zorko said: “I am honoured to receive this Award and am passionate about raising standards of veterinary care both in my own country and more widely in Eastern Europe.”

It currently represents more than 200.000 veterinarians through 101 member associations.  Its annual World Congress brings together globally respected experts to offer cutting edge thinking on all aspects of companion animal veterinary care.
